About Behind: Tilted Chair
Jill M. Zachman, Ph.D.
Imagine a house divided into two wings. At its center, a tilted chair—slightly off
balance—invites reflection on how emotion moves between what is felt and
what is shared.
The Fragrance Wing
This is the intimate wing—the personal side of the house. Here live the
perfumes Joy, Anticipation, Anxiety, and Isolation—each translating emotions
difficult to put into words. These fragrances are meant to be worn, collected,
and carried like fragments of inner language.
The Educational Wing
Across the hall, the second wing opens outward. Through multi-sensory events
that merge scent, image, and text, the public is invited to explore the wider
context of emotion and olfaction. These gatherings—held in Florence, New York
City, and soon Los Angeles—transform fragrance into shared understanding
and dialogue.
Together, these two wings form Tilted Chair—a house built for both solitude
and connection, where fragrance becomes a language between self and world.
